University of Massachusetts Bans College Poker Website

“THE SOURCE for poker at UMass and in the valley” is no longer the source.

The University of Massachusetts sent a takedown notice to the owners of the web domain UMassPoker.com due to “inappropriate use” of the University of Massachusetts Minutemen name and logo. Apparently the college doesn’t like gambling being associated with them, go figure.

The website is run by students for students and is not affiliated with the school. And obviously they aren’t being paid by or sponsored by the college.

The original website had poker tips and strategy articles, online casino links, casino reviews, cash games, tournaments on and off school campus, and brick and mortar casinos in the area. A lot of this was taken down. If you go to the site you can still find the discussion forums – but it’s really, really, really empty. Apparently they were inundated with spammers and had to delete some posts. Seems like there were a lot of spam posts because they only have 49 posts at the moment in total. Such is life at a casino or poker website, spam is a constant battle.

“The UMass name and logo are university property, and they cannot be used without the university’s permission. This Web site is not an appropriate use. If they don’t comply then we go to court,” says Ed Blaguszewski, a spokesman for the University of Massachusetts.

The University plans to take the poker website owners to court with a lawsuit if they don’t do what they say, which includes taking down the internet poker site completely.

“We never got any grief over it,” said Brett Burdick, a graduate of University of Massachusetts Amherst and a site moderator for the past year. “There’s sites just like this all over the country on college campuses.”

It’s kind of shame since the site had been up for five years. In internet years, that’s a LONG TIME. Internet time is estimated to be at a ratio of 9:1. So the website in internet years is 45 years old. Yes, I just invented the term Internet Years™. Patent pending. Royalties payable to me.

Going back to the college poker website, the only text on the home page is:

This website is offline.

You can still check out the poker forum where there is some discussion about what’s going on with the site.

Register a user name and talk about it.

Here’s hoping they can get through this and get their UMass-Amherst poker on.

UPDATE (11/29/2007): Looks like UMassPoker is going off the internet. The webpage has this message:
